Braces-Friendly Fall Recipes

At Niagara Peninsula Orthodontics, we're proud to help patients throughout Niagara Falls, ON and the surrounding areas achieve beautiful, healthy smiles through quality orthodontic treatment. While we strive to make treatment as convenient as possible, we understand that there are inevitable difficulties when achieving a new smile – especially when it comes to food. While wearing braces, you'll need to avoid any foods that are hard, crunchy, sticky, gooey, or chocked with sugar. To help you do it, here are a couple of braces-friendly recipes that are perfect to enjoy this fall!

Apple Cinnamon Pancakes

Nothing makes for a cozy fall day quite like pancakes in the morning, and adding in a dash of apple and cinnamon makes this simple, braces-friendly dish even more autumn-appropriate. Try this easy recipe for braces-friendly apple cinnamon pancakes:

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup tart apple, shredded
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon, ground

  • Directions

First, combine the butter, milk, apple, and egg into a large mixing bowl. Then in a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, sugar, and cinnamon. Add the flour mixture into your large bowl and mix gently, just enough to have everything well combined. Next, turn a griddle or frying pan on medium heat and allow it to heat up until water droplets "dance" when you let a drop fall onto the griddle. Once it's good and hot, use a 1/4 cup scoop to place globs of the mixture on the griddle and cook them until brown on both sides. Serve hot and top with authentic Canadian maple syrups!

    Oven Roasted Butternut Squash

Fall is squash season, and a slow-roasted, soft butternut squash makes for the perfect braces-friendly food! Try this recipe for a dish that's great on its own or as part of a fall meal.

    Ingredients

  • 1 large butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into cubes of about 1"
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon, ground
  • 1 tsp pepper, cracked fresh

  • Directions

First, preheat your oven to 425º F, then line a baking sheet with tinfoil. As the oven heats, throw all of the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and toss or mix them thoroughly until the squash is evenly coated. Dump the squash onto your baking sheet and carefully arrange it so the pieces are spread out roughly evenly. With the oven preheated, bake your squash for 20 minutes before rotating and baking another 20 minutes, making for roughly 40 minutes total. You'll know it's done once the edges of the squash cubes start to caramelize and once the meat of the squash is fork-tender. Once finished, simply pop it out of the oven and serve hot!
