At Niagara Orthodontics, we’re committed to providing exceptional orthodontic care and a personalized treatment plan that meets your needs, whether you’re getting braces or Invisalign. Because many current and potential patients express interest in Invisalign – we’ve also began to receive questions about similar treatment methods, such as Smile Direct Club.

Although they seem very similar, there are many differences between Smile Direct Club and Invisalign. We wanted to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision, and we hope you find what you’re looking for below.

What Is Smile Direct Club?

Instead of going to an orthodontist for orthodontic treatment, Smile Direct Club provide you the molding materials and send you fitted aligners in the mail. You’ll just wear these aligners as prescribed and you can get a straighter smile from the comfort of your own home. The complete process of it is as follows:

  • First, they’ll need to have a 3D image of your teeth, and provide two options for this. The first is to use an at-home impression kit to create a model of your teeth, which you can then send to Smile Direct Club. The other choice is to visit a SmileShop where you can have a scan taken of your smile.
  • After they’ve received this image, a dental professional will review it and determine if their treatment can help you.
  • If you’re a candidate for Smile Direct Club, they’ll create a treatment plan to improve your smile. This plan will typically last about six months on average.
  • Over this time period, you’ll receive aligners through the mail. You’ll wear the aligners in the same way that you would Invisalign treatment – wearing the aligners in a designated order for two weeks at a time.
  • After the treatment is completed, you can then purchase a set of retainers that’ll hold your teeth in their new positions.

Comparing Invisalign and Smile Direct Club

Obviously, the number one difference between the two is that with Smile Direct Club, you’ll be undergoing the entire treatment on your own while with treatment like Invisalign, you are closely monitored by an orthodontic professional. However, with programs like the Smile Direct Club, you’ll be receiving a preplanned treatment – one that has no way of remedying any side effects that can occur and can’t really be refined as you go. With Invisalign, your dentist or orthodontist will be heavily involved with your treatment, as they become very familiar with your dental situation and have the extensive training needed to achieve the best results.

With Smile Direct Club and their aligners, you may end up moving your teeth out of place without even knowing it. Unlike Invisalign, that has tooth colored attachments that help predict your teeth movement, Smile Direct Club’s aligners have no such indicators. Invisalign’s technology creates customized aligners for each patient, with optimized attachments that facilitate specific movements that are closely monitored by a dentist or orthodontist.

Finally, the range of patients that Smile Direct Club can help is relatively narrow. Invisalign has grown to be able to treat more moderate orthodontic cases, giving many patients an option they never had before. Smile Direct Club’s aligners are built for patients that have a very predictable bite, which isn’t the case for many with more moderate to severe issues.
