Clear Aligners FAQ

If you're looking for high-quality orthodontic treatment such as braces or empty linkclear aligners in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Fonthill, and Beamsville, ON, Niagara Orthodontics is proud to be your choice. As your trusted orthodontist, we're happy to provide you with all the information necessary to guarantee that you'll be both comfortable and knowledgeable about any potential orthodontic treatments.

Clear aligners are one of our most popular treatment options, giving patients an incredible new smile without the brackets and wires of braces. They're perfect for teens and adults, who want a more subtle and discreet form of treatment. Dr. Pershad can consult with you or your teen to decide if clear aligners are right for you. Below, you'll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the alternative orthodontic treatment.

Q: How Often Do I Wear the Aligners?

A: In order for the aligners to work as prescribed, you'll have to wear them for up to 22 hours a day. You can remove them when you're eating, drinking, or cleaning your teeth in addition to any important occasions.

Q: Are There Any Restrictions as to What I Can Eat During the Treatment?

A: No. Because clear aligners are removable, you'll be able to eat whatever you like provided you take out your aligners before eating. It's important to note that after you eat and before you put your aligners back in, you should brush your teeth and the aligners.

Q: Will Wearing the Aligners Affect My Speech?

A: There will be a short adjustment period just as there would be for any type of orthodontic treatment. The longer you wear the aligners and speak with them in, the quicker you'll adjust to them.

Q: Is There Any Discomfort with Clear Aligners Treatment?

A: While there may be some pressure and slight discomfort when you first start wearing them, this is absolutely normal and nothing to worry about. This will wear off and it's just a sign that your teeth are gradually moving toward their intended positions.

Q: Can I Chew Gum?

A: If you want to chew gum, we recommend taking out your aligners before doing so. Gum has a tendency to stick to the aligners.

Q: Can I Smoke with My Aligners In?

A: We strongly discourage smoking with your aligners in. Cigarette smoke tends to discolor aligners.

Q: How Do I Keep My Aligners Clean?

A: You'll want to regularly brush them with toothpaste to keep them clean.

Q: How Often Will I See an Orthodontist While Wearing Clear Aligners?

A: You'll come in for regular office visits about once every five or six weeks. These visits are to ensure that your treatment plan is progressing just as planned.

Q: What Happens After My Treatment Is Complete? Will I Need Retainers?

A: All orthodontic patients will need to wear a retainer each and every night. Wearing a retainer will maintain the new position of your teeth and prevent them from shifting back into misalignment.

Q: How Long Does Clear Aligners Treatment Take?

A: The treatment time will vary depending on the severity of the case. Treatment time can take anywhere from six to 18 months.

Q: Do Clear Aligners Work for Kids?

A: As long as their teeth, including their second molars, have grown in, they can be eligible for clear aligners.
