Halloween With Braces

Dr. Pershad and his friendly team at Niagara Orthodontics wants all our patients to enjoy a trouble-free experience while they’re getting the beautiful and healthy smiles they deserve! Whether you’re improving your smile with metal braces or clear braces, you must be careful about what you eat for the duration of your treatment process.

When it comes to bending wires or breaking brackets, there is no bigger culprit than candy. But even though you have braces, you can still have a great time during Halloween if you follow the tips we’ve provided below.

Candy You Can Enjoy While Wearing Braces

Even though you must refrain from eating many types of candy that can do damage to your braces, there is some candy you can enjoy including:

  • Pure chocolate
  • Peanut butter cups
  • Mint patties
  • Soft candy bars without nuts

You can also safely eat a variety of other sweet treats on Halloween like melon, grapes, berries, yogurt (regular & frozen), ice cream and smoothies.

Worst Types of Candy for Those With Braces

Not every candy is braces-friendly. Here are some of types of candy you need to steer clear of on Halloween and the whole year through, for that matter!

  • Taffy
  • Caramel
  • Jelly beans
  • Gum drops
  • Tootsie rolls
  • Licorice
  • Starburst
  • Skittles
  • Candy containing nuts

In addition to these braces-busting candies, you should also avoid eating caramel and candied apples, popcorn, pretzels, beef jerky, bagels and hard pizza crust.
