National Orthodontic Health Month

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, celebrated by orthodontists and dental health professionals in both the United States and Canada. It’s also the month of Halloween, which can be a rough time for teeth! Dr. Pershad and his team want to remind everyone why it’s important to pursue treatment, as well as protect your teeth during this sugar-filled holiday!

The Importance of a Healthy Bite

Having a straight and beautiful smile not only looks great, but is also great for your health. Dr. Pershad chose to be an orthodontist partially because he loves seeing his patients at the conclusion of their treatment, and the new oral and overall benefits they will enjoy. Whether braces or Invisalign are the best fit for you, pursuing treatment is a decision that can change your life for the better.

Additional benefits of orthodontic treatment include:

  • Digestion: A straighter smile and correct bite, can actually help your digestion by making you chew your food more efficiently. In turn, this makes it easier for your body digest your food and extract all the nutrients.
  • Speech: If you struggle with your speech, improving your jaw alignment and bite can help. In some cases, orthodontic treatment can help individuals articulate and speak clearly.
  • Oral Health: A straighter smile, and correct bite, can actually help your oral hygiene by preventing plaque buildup and reducing your chance of cavities.Teeth that are properly aligned are also much easier to brush, floss, and maintain. As a result, it will also make your oral hygiene routine easier and help ensure good oral health.
  • Stability: Once you get braces, Invisalign, or any orthodontic treatment, you won’t have to worry about unwanted changes in your teeth. This is because once your teeth are properly aligned, your teeth will properly fit and support each other, preventing any further movement.
  • Breathing: If you struggle with snoring or other breathing issues, orthodontic treatment can sometimes help.

Celebrating Halloween During National Orthodontic Health Month

 halloween-candy

Halloween is a fun time for many of our adolescent patients, and there’s plenty of candy for everyone to enjoy! We just ask that you are mindful of what you eat to avoid damaging your orthodontic appliances. This doesn’t meant that you can’t indulge in some tasty treats. Do your best to avoid hard or sticky candies if you wear braces, since it can damage them. And for those using Invisalign, just remember to remove your trays before sampling your favorite sweet. Just remember to brush and floss your teeth after you splurge!
