The Holidays & Braces

GKayxfThe holidays are almost here, and while we're all looking forward to some time spent relaxing and reconnecting with loved ones, the holidays present a unique challenge for those wearing braces. That's because many of the foods and sweets we love to indulge in during the holiday season pose a major danger to the brackets, wires, and bands of braces and orthodontic appliances. To help out, here are a few tips for making it through the holidays without breaking your braces.

Eating During the Holidays

In general, you'll want to avoid anything that's hard, crunchy, sticky, gooey, or packed with sugar while you're wearing braces. This includes foods like toffee, hard candy, tootsie rolls, candy canes, and caramels. If you're not sure about a given food, it's always best to air on the side of caution. You can still have fun during the holidays, though! Indulge yourself with chocolate dipped strawberries, blackberries, or bananas, frozen yogurt, or even soft, nut-free cheesecake or brownie. And no matter what you're eating, make sure you brush your teeth well afterwards!

Tips for Keeping Braces & Teeth Healthy During the Holidays

In addition to watching your diet, there are a number of other steps you can take to keep your braces happy during the holidays. Here are a few of our holiday survival tips:

  • Brush & Floss Incessantly: Oral hygiene is always important, but it's even more critical while wearing braces. It's easy to slip up during the holidays, but we encourage you to be diligent about maintaining your oral hygiene routine. You should brush after every meal or snack and floss daily, as this is the only way to protect your teeth during treatment.
  • Visit Us Regularly: It's easy to miss appointments with your dentist or orthodontist during the hustle and bustle of the holidays, but for the sake of your teeth and braces, we encourage you to stay diligent on your appointment schedule. Scheduling appointments well in advance, before the holidays really get going, is a great strategy for keeping on track.
  • Perform Routine Inspections: Another thing that's easy to forget during the holidays is to keep an eye on your braces for problems. With all the excitement, you might break or loosen a wire without even noticing! Make a habit of performing regular inspections of your braces and teeth for breakage, loose parts, or any other problems.
