Who Needs Surgical Orthodontics

Posted on 03/31/2022

Sometimes conventional orthodontic solutions cannot successfully treat a bite problem. A severe malocclusion (bad bite) may require surgical treatment, especially if it is causing functional problems. Surgical orthodontics is used to treat severe cases of jawbone abnormalities and malocclusion. This can include speech difficulties, inability to properly chew food, and facial dysfunction. At Niagara Peninsula Orthodontics, we strive to educate all of our patients on what options work best for them. If your orthodontist has determined that you need surgery, here's what you need to know and what to expect.

Why Do I Need Surgery?

Adults suffering from severe malocclusion or adults that have concerns about their facial appearance may consider surgical orthodontics. Your orthodontist will evaluate your mouth structure, which includes your jaw, teeth, and gums before making a diagnosis. Typically, jaw growth stops between the age of 16 and 18. When the jaw does not line up properly it can cause functional and aesthetic problems for the patient. Orthognathic surgery may be needed to move the jaw and teeth into their correct position.

What to Know

Orthodontic surgery can only be performed by a licensed oral surgeon and will usually take place in a hospital setting. The surgery can take several hours and once complete, you will be required to rest for at least two weeks. You will be advised not to work or go to school during this period, so plan accordingly and notify your employer or teachers. Once the jaw has healed, your bite will be analyzed by the orthodontist. You may still be required to wear braces or clear aligners for 6-12 months. After that, you'll be required to wear retainers to maintain the proper position of your teeth.

Like all major surgeries, there are risks associated with orthognathic surgery. If you have any concerns or questions, please ask your oral surgeon. Your provider will work with you to create a treatment plan that works best for you.

Benefits

For many patients, the best reward is relief and a healthy, beautiful smile. Orthognathic surgery can correct malocclusions (crooked bites) and jaw abnormalities This includes an improper function of the jaw for chewing, speaking more clearly, and smiling more confidently. It is also considered a treatment option for those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. Depending on what your orthodontist recommends, surgery may be the best option for you.
